Flowers & Loy Kratong Thailand

Loi Krathong is an annual celebration in Thailand. It takes place on the night of full moon in the 12th month of the lunar calendar, which is usually in November. “Loi” means to float and “Krathong” is traditionally made from banana stem, but you can also use bread or styrofoam. A Krathong is decorated by folded banana leaves, flowers, candles and incense sticks and is formed like a lotus flower. A coin or some locks of hair are added as offering to the river spirits. This is traditionally done to ask for the river spirits forgiveness in polluting the rivers. During the full moon, Thais will let their Krathong float on the river, canal, pond or lake. They believe that this will carry bad luck and sin away from them. They first make wishes before letting the Krathong float down the river. It is such an amazing sight to see where the river is lighted with thousands of Krathong.

After knowing the significance of Loi Krathong, let us try to know how to make a Krathong boat. All we need is:

  1. A sliced stem of banana stem or trunk
  2. Lotus flowers
  3. Roses (different kinds but red is preferred)
  4. Marigold flowers
  5. Banana leaves
  6. Incense sticks
  7. Candles
  8. Staples or glue for securing the flowers and leaves together

Note: If banana trees are not available you can improvise by using bread or Styrofoam.

How to Assemble:

  1. Cut the banana leaves into strips (must be narrow)
  2. Shape it into triangles. This will be use to form a coronet as base for the Krathong.
  3. Form the triangle leaves into a crown shape. Fix it with staples and glue.
  4. Fill the center of the crown with more banana leaves and this will become the base of your Krathong.
  5. Then, be creative by decorating it with different flowers.
  6. Then put incense sticks and candles.

After assembling your Krathong test it if it floats. You can also add fireworks to add spice to it and some coins or hair locks as offering for the river spirits.

This tradition goes way back for centuries as a sign of respect to the spirits. And it will continue until the next generations. So next time you visit Thailand, try to see and experience the beauty of Loi Krathong.

Flowers replace opium in Thailand

Thailand, particularly its northern part formed the Golden Triangle of opium trade together with Laos and Burma (now Myanmar). Since the introduction of opium in East Asia, Thailand was one of the leading growers of opium. Most of us would conclude that opium cultivation and its trade was primarily done because of its known narcotic effects. However, opium trade was an industry that helped support many lives back then. Nonetheless, because of local decrees and international laws that were imposed – there were measures that helped opium growers in Thailand to find more sustainable livelihood.

One of the most prominent programs that introduced alternative crops to opium farmers is the Doi Tung Development Project. It was spearheaded by Princess Srinagarindra. The project (still ongoing) successfully introduced orchids and other flowers to replace opium as the major cash crop in Doi Tung. The opium farmers were taught the proper methods to grow orchids. They were also taught different techniques of flower arrangement. Simultaneous to these activities, the development project realized the Pha Mee Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in 1992. The centre provided 1000 days of rehabilitation to opium addicts within the Doi Tung area. The opium addicts were also taught different livelihood projects that are mainly associated with orchid culture, growing, and arrangement.

The Doi Tung Development Project is regarded as Thailand’s trophy for its successful implementation of the opium replacement program. Among the countries who adopted the program, Thailand is the only country seen to significantly cut the production of opium in its territory. Its success is greatly attributed to the diverse orchid species found in Thailand.

The interest of the royal family with orchids is also another factor why its introduction as opium replacement crop was largely embraced by the constituents of Doi Tung and the whole Thailand as well.  In fact, because of the wide support of Doi Tung constituents, similar development projects were also implemented in various parts of Thailand.

To date, Thailand continues to be included in the top three orchid-exporting countries in the world along with Taiwan and Netherlands. The orchid industry of Thailand generates massive profits and is still projected to generate more within the coming years.

The high success of the Doi Tung Development Project in replacing opium with orchids as a cash crop is highly acclaimed by other countries. In fact, leaders of other countries together with their officials who are in-charge of similar sustainable livelihood projects and opium replacement projects are visiting the site on regular intervals. Global leaders, particularly those from countries where opium cultivation and relevant trade are still wanting to mimic Thailand’s success in this area.

The Doi Tung Development Project is not only an example of a project that brought significant improvement in people’s lives. It is a project that exemplifies how well cooperative efforts can change a society bound by traditions and practices – whether good or bad.

To date, the Doi Tung Development Project through its wonderful flower gardens is a living example that with strict implementation, opium poppy can be eliminated and replaced by orchids as major livelihood sources.

Flowers are a good cash crop for farmers in Thailand

Thailand’s economic backbone is mainly supported by the agriculture sector with floriculture as the largest contributor in terms of GDP.  The numerous nurseries, flower gardens, and florists present around Thailand are proofs that the flower Thailand industry is alive and doing well for the country’s economy.  The presence of these establishments that focus their daily operations on flowers is also a solid proof that flowers are good cash crops for flower farms. From these flower farms, they are either exported to other countries or are delivered to local florists that made them available to the flower-loving public. One of these flowers is the Damask or more popularly known as the common rose. This species of flower, though not native to Thailand has successfully conquered every Thai garden such that it has also become one of the most popular flowers commonly given as gifts.

Rows of Flowers

Chrysanthemums are also among the flowers that quickly became cash crops in Thailand. This occurrence is largely attributed to the Royal Project that aimed to provide alternative crops to opium farmers. In general, the common colours of the chrysanthemums include yellow, pink, and lavender. However, the Royal Project successfully created spider varieties and they are made available as fresh-cuts. The vibrant colours of the mums, as Chrysanthemums are commonly called perfectly suit any garden and add life to a waning brilliance.

Another flower that is highly considered as cash crop in Thailand is daisy. These star-shaped flowers that belong to the aster family are widely cultivated across Thailand’s flower farms due to its high use in different festivals and occasions. Daisies along with sunflowers, marigolds, amaranths and zinnias are commonly used to decorate Loi Kratong during the celebration of the festival in November.

The largest group of flowers that are regarded cash crops in Thailand are the orchids. These flowers have also their respective parts in different occasions, celebrations and festivals. Majority of Thailand’s orchid cultivars are exported to other countries. This is one of the reasons why there are distinct orchid farms that grow different varieties of orchids only. Popular orchid varieties that are commercially grown include dendrobiums, oncidiums, vandas, and epidendrums.

Orchid exportation alone generates more than $80 million dollars of revenue each year. This is despite close competition with another Asia country, Taiwan. The projected increase in the demand of orchids around the world intensifies Thailand’s desire to reclaim the spot it once held strongly.

The large revenue combined with the natural abundance of different flowers and orchids in Thailand are enough reasons to support Thai government’s continuous pursuit to make flowers as alternative cash crops. Flowers are far more beneficial to be planted than addictive opium. Flowers are legal and be conveniently grown with the public’s awareness.

Flowers Vs Teddy Bears Thailand

Flowers and teddy bears are two things that never fail to surface in the lists of best gifts. The two are always in comparison. They share similar characteristics that make them popular choices among gift-givers and the recipients as well.

However, in a certain study made in Thailand, it was revealed that flowers are more popular choices than teddy bears. The respondents generally agree that flowers are less costly than teddy bears. They stressed that flowers in Thailand are in abundance and they can usually get some for free. Teddy bears came in close second, being more expensive than flowers as the primary reason why they slipped to the second spot.

Another reason behind the popularity of flowers as gifts in Thailand is its cultural significance in the country. For instance, there are several festivities and events that aren’t complete without flowers to set joyous moods. For instance, the Loi Kratong and the Chiang Mai Flower Festival are evidences that flowers have strong relevance to Thailand’s cultural heritage. The present king’s mother also pioneered sustainable livelihood development projects through flowers.  This is another deep reason behind the popularity of flowers over teddy bears.

On the other hand, teddy bears, although they have no significant part in Thailand’s history are also slowly becoming popular gifts. Apparently, teddy bear makers are exhausting all their marketing efforts to make teddy bears as part of Thailand’s continuing history.

Nonetheless, it cannot be denied that at present, flowers are still on their stronghold of dominating the lists of popular gifts. A certain forum engaged its online members on a discussion to determine whether flowers or teddy bears are more popular gifts. Based on the answers provided by its members, flowers have great gaps over teddy bears.

The forum members also provided several reasons why they chose flowers over teddy bears. A certain member pointed out the practicality of giving flowers as gifts. She further stressed that flowers are cheaper than teddy bears and that most girls will definitely love the romance implied by them than teddy bears.

Another user also explained that he loved to send flowers to his previous girlfriends. He stated that the flowers he gave were all from their garden and that he was the one who took care of the flowers until they bloomed fully. He further suggested to other men that they need to plant the favourite flower of their special women. He thought of this as a very romantic act that will make very girl admire you for sparing some time to care for her most favourite flower.

Majority of the forum posters who were women agreed that flowers will eventually die. Nonetheless, they all agreed that the romantic memories that came along with the flowers will not wilt or die as the flowers’ petals and stems die. Due to this, flowers are still preferred over teddy bears.

There are some who insisted that to make a more romantic presentation, flowers and teddy bears can always go in combination as the perfect gift items for everyone.

Valentines Day Flowers in Thailand

Valentines Day is a very much anticipated event in the Thai calendar. It has consistently grown in popularity and is considered a western holiday that has been adopted by many of the Asian locales. Whilst it is not related to the Thai culture in any way, it is still celebrated with much a do all over Thailand.

Giving flowers in Thailand on Valentines Day is almost compulsory. Because of the immense popularity of this holiday, thoughtful consideration should be given to the arrangement that you choose to give. Thai women, regardless of their age, expect to receive a bunch of flowers on Valentines day. To not receive them from a loved one or partner would be insulting.

Be sure to choose the type of flower that you want to give. Just as important as the flower is the colour. Traditionally, around the world, the rose is regarded as the flower of love. Choosing red is a good indicator of the depth of love that you feel for your partner or spouse. Choosing white may represent purity and hope, whilst yellow or pink are not recommended as Valentines flowers because they can be symbols of nurturing and ones that may be given to a mother or grandmother.

Because of the massive popularity of this annual day, you may also consider including with your flowers a small gift. Thai women enjoy cute animal related toys and replicas. For a minimal amount of money you can have a teddy bear or other type of soft or plush toy attached to your flowers.

Whatever the gift, or type of flower or colour that you select, the best piece of advice that you should ever get is that neglecting to give flowers on Valentines Day would result in a very negative message to your Thai partner or spouse.
